At Skagit Valley Malting, we are striving to offer products that reduce the impact on the environment. We’re encouraging our growers to become certified for a variety of sustainable growing practices that make sense in their overall farm plan. By making sure it works for them, along with our environment, we are able to create products that go beyond a one size fits all approach. Each grower regularly reviews and reduces their inputs and impacts. We’re tracking that information to help our customers make more intelligent decisions on their product sourcing.

We offer products from growers that are Certified Organic, Salmon Safe, and Rainforest Alliance Certified. One size doesn’t fit all and each farm is different, but each grower understands the impacts their farming has on the environment.

Along with these certifications on the growing side, we’ve adapted our malting practices and energy usage to reduce our carbon footprint and move towards a zero waste facility.

  1. In 2019 we transitioned all of our energy purchasing to renewable resources - wind and solar, through Puget Sound Energy’s Green Power program. We also have a solar array on the roof of our malthouse.

  2. Our malting by-products (rootlets and other organic materials) go to on-farm digesters to generate electricity through decomposition of organic matter.

Sustainability has become a part of our mission and ethos, perhaps it is because of our connection to the Skagit Valley and a result of seeing what it takes to make an agricultural region viable. The Valley is our home and we believe we can have a positive impact on the future prosperity of this land for generations to come.
