Skagit Valley Malting was founded in 2011 with the promise of a pursuit of flavor for craft brewers, distillers, and culinary customers. SVM brings the flavorful terroir of the bountiful Skagit River Valley to these new products from a place outside of the traditional commodified malt system. This allows consumers to have a true taste of place. With patented technology that is designed for variance in RAW materials instead of homogeneity, Skagit Valley Malting continues to push the boundaries of Premium Craft Malt in the US.

Barley Selected for Craft

With over 90 different crops grown each year in the Skagit Valley, it is an important agricultural region for our state and country. By creating the highest value market for barley, we have made it more viable to be a farmer in the Skagit Valley. Barley is grown in the Valley for crop rotation, nutrient replenishment in the soil, and a cover crop. We add value for our growers, customers, and end consumers by anchoring beer and spirits to our region.

Craft malt not only supports small farmers, but helps processes like barley breeding (increased genetic variety of products), builds markets for ingredients that are grown sustainably, and provides flavors that are not available from larger providers. Craft Malt drives change in commoditized supply chains by increasing demand for products similar to craft malt.

Skagit Valley Malting has advantages in technology that allow us to malt a large variety of grains. By designing our system around a process that is versatile (and being able to modify our machines and software in house) we can malt almost any grain. Instead of designing grains for malting, we designed malting for grains.
