Skagit Valley Malting Launches Charity Brew Program

Skagit Valley Malting Launches Charity Brew Program

SVM is excited to announce our 2019 Charity beer mission. Over the course of the year, we will be donating malt to 12 brewers for charity brews. As a craft malt house we wanted to give brewers the opportunity to brew beer with local ingredients that benefit local causes in their communities. Every month a brewery will receive donated grain and hops from us and a hop partner. The brewery will than take proceeds from the sales of beer and donate to a charity of their choosing.

We launched this new project with a collaboration between  Gruff Brewing Company and The North Fork Brewery on Wednesday, January 16th. We also partnered with Northwest Hop Farm, from Chilliwack, BC, Canada to supply the hops and a special ingredient, Chinook hops infused with spruce tips for a dry hop addition. Together we decided that because the ski season has just started it would be fitting to brew a beer that benefits Washington skiers and snowboarders.

This decision led us to support the Northwest Avalanche Center (NWAC) and their mission to “save lives and reduce the impacts of avalanches on recreation, industry, and transportation in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington and northern Oregon through mountain weather and avalanche forecasting, data collection and education”. We were so happy Jeff, from NWAC, was able to join us and talk to everyone about the importance of this organization.

The community of Bellingham loves Mt. Baker, many of the brewers who keep us hydrated spend their well deserved days off shredding the slopes. Washington mountains bring people a great deal of joy but they are a dangerous place and Bellingham has felt the impacts of tragic accidents over the years. As a community, we strive to protect the people that live here while ensuring they can experience all the fun our state has to offer.

Thank you NWAC for your hard work and commitment to keeping people safe in the mountains!
